We want to make sure your recording experience is as smooth as possible. To help with that, we’ve put together some simple tips and recommendations for recording in Rooms. These tips will ensure you get the best possible recording quality.
☐ Use a supported browser and device
Make sure you’re using a supported browser (Chrome, Edge, Arc, Firefox, Safari, or Opera) on a desktop or laptop. Avoid using mobile devices or unsupported browsers to prevent issues.
☐ Ensure a strong internet connection
For the best experience, use a wired connection if possible (plug your computer directly into your router). If you’re using Wi-Fi, sit close to your router and close any unnecessary apps or browser tabs.
Before starting, it’s a good idea to check your internet speed using fast.com (you may need to click Show more info to see your upload speeds). Here’s what we recommend:
- Minimum speeds: 10 Mbps for both upload and download.
- Recommended speeds: 20 Mbps for upload and download.
If you're recording in 4K or doing more intensive tasks, aim for at least 30 Mbps upload to keep everything running smoothly. Remember, the higher the resolution or the more content you’re capturing, the faster your internet should be to ensure a smooth call experience and a quick upload time.
☐ Set up in a quiet, well-lit space
Find a quiet area with as little background noise as possible. If you’re on video, make sure your face is well-lit and your background looks tidy.
If there’s noise around you, consider enabling “Background noise reduction” in the settings under Settings > Audio. This will reduce the noise on your call and recording.
☐ How to set up your mic and camera
An external mic and camera are ideal for high-quality results. But if you’re using your built-in mic and camera, sit directly in front of the camera and speak clearly into the mic.
Tip: Watch the VU meter when speaking. Your voice should fill about 75% of the meter (filling the white area and just touching into the yellow, but not red).
☐ Headphones are strongly recommended
Headphones help prevent echo and other sound issues. We recommend using them while recording. If you can’t, make sure Echo Cancellation is turned on in Settings > Audio.
Note: by answering the question "Are you wearing headphones?" in the lobby, you are implicitly setting Echo Cancellation (Yes: Disabled; No: Enabled).
☐ Double check your network health after joining a Room.
Once you join a room, you can expand the People tab to see the health status of your network. Green means you are good to go!
☐ Wait for your recording to finish uploading before closing the tab
After your recording ends, wait until you see the upload confirmation message before closing the tab.
Note: You can leave the call after the recording ends, but on the next screen, wait until your upload finishes. If anything goes wrong, your host can guide you to the Descript Rooms recovery link.
