Record or import your audio

There are two main ways to start creating a podcast in Descript: recording directly in the app, or importing an existing file.

Record in Descript

Start by recording in Descript or importing an existing audio file.

  • Descript Rooms: Record remotely with guests or co-hosts in up to 4K video. Each participant’s audio and video are recorded separately for easier editing.
  • Direct recording into Descript: Record directly into your composition. Your recording goes straight into your project.

Import an existing recording

If you already have a recording, you can import it into Descript. A few options:

Descript supports several other import methods too. See all importing options.

Importing multiple files at once

Working with multiple tracks? Sequences make it easy to group related files and edit them as a unified script. Learn more about sequences.

Edit your podcast

Once your audio is transcribed, edit it just like you would a text document—cut, copy, paste, or delete sections of your script, and the media updates automatically. If you're new to script editing, check out our guide on editing like a doc.

Use AI to speed up editing (optional)

Want to speed up your editing? Here are some AI-powered features that can help:

  • Underlord: An AI assistant that removes filler words, cuts retakes, tightens rambling sections, adds chapter markers, and more—saving you hours of manual work.
  • Templates: Pre-built workflows that automatically apply your preferred edits and effects to new projects.

Improve audio quality

Studio Sound uses AI to reduce background noise, remove echo, and improve voice clarity. Apply it from the Properties panel, or ask Underlord to enhance your audio.

Fine-tune in the timeline

While most editing happens in the script editor, the timeline gives you precise control over clip boundaries, word spacing, and transitions. Learn more about working in the timeline.

Some common timeline tasks:

  • Granular edits: Use the Timeline tools for precise control over cuts and transitions.
  • Add transitions: Seamlessly move from scene to scene with our built-in transitions.
  • Adjust word spacing: Use the wordbar to adjust word pacing for better flow.

Export your podcast

Once you’re satisfied with your podcast, it’s time to share it with the world. Descript offers a wide variety of export options.
