Using layouts

Layouts are visual templates you can use in to quickly arrange scenes. They can contain supplementary elements like backgrounds, title cards, or lower thirds — or they can be entire scenes that you use across multiple videos. Use layout to speed up your workflow, create consistent visual identity across your videos, or for easy branding.

To apply a layout:

  1. Open Scenes and select Choose template at the top of the panel
  2. Look through the available templates:
    • Gallery contains Descript's fully customizable layouts for all your needs.
    • Drive and Private tabs contain any custom layouts you have access to.
  3. Click on a thumbnail to apply the layout to your scene. Descript will adjust your scene while preserving the your media in the scene to match the layout. If the layout's aspect ratio differs from the current aspect ratio, click match orientation to match the aspect ratio.
  4. Swap between layout until you find one you like, or choose Undo if you want to go back to your original scene.
Empty Layers After Applying Layouts

After applying a layout, you might see some extra, empty layers called placeholder layers. These appear when the layout expects more content than you've provided. For example, if a layout is designed for three speaker videos and you only have two, a placeholder will show where the third video should go. You can remove any unneeded placeholder layers from your scene.
