Why Is My Import or Upload Taking So Long?

When you import a file into Descript, the time it takes to process depends on several factors, including your personal network's upload speed, the file size, and any background processing like optimization and transcription. If your import is taking longer than expected, here’s what might be happening and what you can do about it.

What Happens When You Import a File?

When you add media to a Descript project, several processes occur:

  • File Upload – Your media is uploaded to the cloud so you can access it across devices.
  • Optimized File Creation – Descript generates a smaller, lower-resolution proxy file to improve playback performance.
  • Transcription (if enabled) – If your file contains audio, Descript automatically transcribes it.

These processes ensure smooth editing but can add some time before your media is fully ready.

Factors That Affect Import Speed

Upload Speed

Your internet upload speed directly impacts how quickly Descript can process your file. A slow connection will result in a longer wait time.

  • Check your upload speed – Use a speed test tool (e.g., fast.com or speedtest.net).
  • Recommended speeds – A minimum of 10 Mbps upload speed is recommended for smooth performance, but higher is better for large files.

File Size and Type

Larger files take longer to process. Video files, especially high-resolution ones, require more time for uploading and optimization.

Background Processing

Descript automatically creates optimized proxy files for smoother editing. Your final export will always use the original file, so you don’t need to worry about quality loss. If required, you can disable optimized files in settings, but this is not recommended.

What to Do If Your Import Is Stuck

If your file is taking significantly longer than expected, try these troubleshooting steps:

  1. Check your internet connection – A slow or unstable connection can delay the import process.
  2. Replace the file – If your transcription or optimization seems stuck, try re-importing the file via the replace file feature.
  3. Restart Descript – Close and reopen the app to potentially refresh the upload process.
