Smooth jump cuts

When you delete words or trim parts of your content, the audio and video often jump at those cuts. Smooth jump cuts scans your entire composition, finds every jump cut, and uses Regenerate to heal the video and audio at each one.

Before you start

Smooth jump cuts runs on Regenerate, Descript’s AI tool for generating video and audio to conceal jump cuts. Finish your rough cut edits before running this action (adding or removing content after smoothing will create new cuts that need to be addressed separately). Smooth your jump cuts in bulk

1. Open the AI tools panel in the right-hand sidebar.
   1. In video compositions, select Smooth jump cuts under Look Good.
   2. In audio-only compositions, find it under Sound Good.
2. Choose a method:
   • Find first: Descript scans the composition and lists every jump cut for you to review before anything changes. Play back each cut and smooth only the ones you choose. Use this when your composition has intentional cuts you want to leave alone, like scene changes or cuts between different camera angles.
   • Smooth all: Descript finds and smooths every jump cut in one pass, regenerating audio and video for each cut automatically. Smooth all processes 5 cuts per batch — if your composition has more cuts, Descript queues the rest and continues. You can cancel cuts still in the queue; cuts already running finish on their own.
3. Choose what to regenerate: Audio and video or Audio only.
4. Click Submit.
5. If you chose Find first, Descript lists every cut in the sidebar — play back each one and smooth the cuts you want to fix. If you chose Smooth all, Descript processes the cuts and lets you review each result when it finishes.
6. On any individual cut, click Smooth (the bandage icon) to heal it. After smoothing, you can Revert to the original, Retry Regenerate, or Keep the result.

Smooth cuts after other AI actions

Smooth jump cuts is also available directly from the results of other AI editing tools:

• Edit for Clarity: after removing filler words or shortening word gaps, turn on the Smooth jump cuts option to heal any new jump cuts those edits created.
• Remove Media and Shorten Word Gaps: both tools offer a Regenerate treatment alongside their results. Choose Audio and video, Audio only, or Keep jump cuts to control what happens at each new cut.
