Unsupported recording devices and services

If your microphone or webcam isn’t working in Descript — or you’re seeing missing audio, static, or your device isn’t appearing — the issue may be due to a compatibility problem with your recording setup. This article lists microphones, webcams, virtual devices, and software that can cause issues when recording in Descript. The list below reflects the incompatibilities we’re currently aware of, but there may be other devices or software that can cause issues when using Descript.

If you're unsure whether your system meets Descript's minimum specs, check our System Requirements for macOS and Windows.

Potential compatibility issues with virtual equipment and third-party software

  • Virtual cameras, virtual microphones, and audio interfaces are not officially supported. While they may work, we cannot guarantee full compatibility.
  • Devices that require a bridge, third-party software, special drivers, or tweaked system settings have been known to cause issues in the past. The device may work to record in Descript, though we cannot guarantee functionality. For issues that arise, please reach out to the camera manufacturer.

Audio devices known to cause issues

  • AirPods
  • All ASIO drivers
  • Krisp (even when not selected)
  • Rode Podcaster USB mic
  • Rodecaster audio interfaces

Cameras, webcams, and software known to cause issues

  • Camo*
  • Elgato Camlink
  • ElecEye 1080P HD
  • EOS Webcam Utility
  • GoPro
  • Iriun Webcam
  • Krisp Camera
  • Logi Tune (disable while recording in Descript)
  • Logitech BRIO (specifically when recording in 4k)
  • Lumina Plus
  • Opal Camera
  • Sony Imaging Edge
  • Continuity Camera (macOS)*

*These devices have a network component, so reliability becomes tied to your network. For this reason, we generally recommend against using these devices, especially for any critical work.

Using an iPhone as a webcam with Continuity Camera

Continuity Camera may work, but it isn’t officially supported. Even if your iPhone supports 4K recording, Continuity Camera limits webcam resolution to 1080p.

Check if your webcam supports 4K recording

Descript does not currently support recording in 4K on Windows.

For non-Windows users, confirm if your device supports 4K recording with these steps:

  • In Chrome, visit: chrome://media-internals/
  • In Edge, visit: edge://media-internals/
  • Look under the Video Capture tab to view supported resolutions.

If 4K isn’t listed, your webcam may not support 4K video capture in Descript.
