Use Edit with AI to change part of an image with a short text prompt — add a new object, remove a distraction, or restyle a specific area of your visual.
This feature is best for altering a part of your existing image. For larger-scale changes to the entire image, use Generate an image or video with your current frame as a reference.

How to edit your image with AI
Edit with AI uses two tools. The pencil modifies the selected area based on your prompt. The eraser removes the selected area and fills it using surrounding image content.
- Select an image layer in the Scene Editor.
- Click Edit with AI in the layer toolbar.
- Choose your tool: the pencil to add or change something, or the eraser to remove something.
- Draw around the area you want to edit. To clear a selection and re-draw the boundary, click the Reset button.
- If you're using the pencil, enter a short prompt describing the change.
- Click Generate. The Scene Editor pulses while Descript works; the new image replaces the original when it's done.
Descript creates a new file in your AI Assets folder in the Project files panel for each iteration.
Tips for better results
- AI doesn't always nail it on the first try. Iterate by adjusting your selection, refining your prompt, or running Edit with AI again.
- When erasing, include the full object and any obvious shadow or reflection in your selection.
- For more control over a pencil edit, attach a reference image.
Known limitations
- Image layers only. Videos, GIFs, stickers, text, and other media types aren't supported.
- Complex edges are harder. Hair, transparent objects, overlapping objects, detailed patterns, shadows, reflections, and areas that cross multiple background textures may leave soft edges, leftover fragments, or visible changes around the selection.
- Replacements may not always match scale, lighting, or perspective. If a pencil edit looks off, either Undo and try a more specific prompt or use Edit with AI again to modify the image again.
- Expanding past the original image isn't supported yet. Edit with AI only changes content within the existing frame.
Need to change the entire image?
Edit with AI only works within the selected area. To change the whole image, use Generate an image or video with your current frame as a reference.
