Descript makes it easy to create multilingual videos that help your content reach a global audience. Our multilingual toolkit includes features for captions, dubbing, and lip syncing—so you can add subtitles, voiceovers, or realistic dubbing to your video. You’ll find both options in the AI Tools panel under the Repurpose section.

Translate supports three distinct features, which you can use together or separately. See full feature availability by plan.

• Translate captions – Creates translated captions and transcripts from your original script
• Dub speech – Replaces your spoken audio with a translated voiceover
• Lipsync – Aligns mouth movements with dubbed speech

Before you translate

Translation is a finishing step! Unlike features you can toggle on and off, translating creates a new composition with new audio (and video, if you use lip-sync). If you make changes to your project after translating, you'll need to re-translate and use more AI credits.

For best results, complete your composition before you translate. We recommend:

• Finalize your scenes, layout, and visuals
• Add and style captions to your original content
• Correct any necessary script changes

Choose a workflow

Option 1: Manually translate and/or dub your content

Translate your captions into another language → Ideal if you want .srt subtitles, burned-in captions, or translated transcripts.

Dub speech for voiceover in another language → Create a translated audio version of your content using AI Speakers. 

Apply lipsync to make dubbed speech look natural → Adjusts your speaker's mouth movements to match the translated audio.

Option 2: Have Underlord do the heavy lifting

If you’d rather skip the manual steps, you can ask Underlord—Descript’s AI co-editor—to handle translation and dubbing for you.

Click the Underlord icon in the bottom-right corner of your project and enter a prompt like:

"Add German captions to this video, and also create a version where you dub it in French"

Underlord will apply the translation, assign a voice, and generate the dubbed track automatically. You can review and adjust the results just like you would if you’d done it manually.

Feature availability by plan

*Lip-sync is only available on Descript's current subscription plans. Users on Legacy or Sunset plans cannot access this feature.
