AI Video Maker

Descript’s AI Video Maker turns ideas into ready-to-edit videos—complete with a generated script, voiceover, visuals, and optional avatar. Start with a prompt, a script, or existing footage, and Descript will handle the rest.

How to use Descript's AI Video Maker

  1. Go to the Home tab. Under Popular Features, click AI Video Maker.
  2. Choose how to start:
    • Upload an audio or video file to generate visuals and narration from existing footage.
    • Generate from a prompt—e.g., “Create a video about the origins of the Welsh Corgi” or “Explain how honeybees communicate through dancing.”
    • Paste a script. Avoid stage directions, speaker labels, or formatting like bold or square brackets (common in ChatGPT outputs). Note: Only scripts written in supported TTS languages can be used with the AI Video Maker.
  3. In the Voiceover step:
    • Select a stock AI speaker for the narration.
    • Optional: Assign an avatar from the gallery
  4. Choose your video’s aspect ratio:
    • Landscape (16:9)
    • Portrait (9:16)
    • Square (1:1)
  5. Pick your visual style for b-roll:
    • Choose one of five styles of AI-generated media:
      • Low Polygon 3D: Blocky and game-like
      • Plasticine: Claymation-style and colorful
      • Watercolor and Ink: Soft and storybook-like
      • Whiteboard Doodles: Sketchy and playful
      • Collage: Cut-out shapes and layered textures, modern and artsy
    • Or, select Stock media – Pulls from Descript’s stock media library.
  6. Click Continue to start generating. It may take a few minutes to process, especially if an avatar is included.

Once ready, your video will appear as a new composition in a fully editable Descript project.

Generate a video with ChatGPT

You can also use the AI Video Maker directly in ChatGPT with Descript’s GPT. Just describe your idea, and a video will be created and sent to your Descript Drive.

Limitations when using ChatGPT

  • You can't select a specific AI voice or avatar—Descript will choose for you.

After it’s delivered to your Drive, you can open the video like any other Descript project and make full edits to the script, voice, visuals, and layout.
