Smooth jump cuts

When you delete words or trim parts of your content, the audio and video often jump at these cuts. Descript's Smooth jump cuts tool scans your rough cut, analyzes those jumps, and then uses AI to heal the video and audio at each jump cut so it looks and sounds... well, smoother.

Usage note

On current plans, this feature uses AI Credits. Learn more about tracking your Media Minutes and AI Credits.

Legacy and Sunset plans track usage differently. See our Understanding your Legacy and Sunset plan guide for details.

Before you start

Smooth jump cuts runs on Regenerate, Descript's AI tool for generating video and audio to conceal an obvious jump cut. For the best experience, we recommend finishing your first pass of rough cut edits before using the tool. Learn more about editing your content like a doc.

This feature works best on single-track content

Smooth jump cuts is limited to audio-only regenerate on multi-track sequences.

Smooth your jump cuts in bulk

  1. Open the AI tools panel in the right-hand sidebar and select Smooth jump cuts from the Look Good section.
  2. Then, choose a method for addressing your cuts:
    • Find first: Descript finds every jump cut and lists them for you to review before anything changes. You play back each one and smooth only the cuts you choose. Use this when your composition has intentional cuts you want to leave alone, like scene changes or cuts between camera angles.
    • Smooth all: Descript finds and smooths every jump cut in one pass, regenerating the audio and video for every individual cut in bulk.
  3. Choose what to regenerate: Audio and video or Audio only.
  4. Click Submit.
  5. If you chose the Find first method, Descript lists every cut it found in the sidebar. Play back a cut before deciding how to address it; if you chose Smooth all, Descript automatically starts smoothing every cut, then lets you review each result.
  6. Click Smooth (the bandage icon) on any cut you want to heal; after smoothing, you can also Revert back to the original, Retry regenerate, or Keep the healed jump cut.
