The new timeline experience is a new way to edit video in Descript. It's designed to make video editing simpler and more intuitive, especially for users who rely on the timeline for precise control. This new layout helps you see your video more clearly and makes it quicker to trim, split, and add scenes right from the timeline.
If your interface looks different from what's shown here, you may be using Descript’s classic Timeline layout. You can view the original Timeline overview (classic) and Timeline tools (classic) articles instead.
What’s new in the timeline
- Scene rail removed: Scenes now live inside the timeline.
- No more slashes in the script: Scenes are now represented in the script with a thumbnail image.
-
Simplified timeline indicators: Easily see comments, audio, and other elements with icons placed directly in the timeline where they occur.
- New split button: Add scenes and split clips or layers with one click.
- Timeline tools: Now found in the toolbar. Be sure to toggle on Advanced Timeline Tools from the View menu to access the dropdown.
- Storyboard view: Get a visual overview of every scene in your composition and quickly jump between them.
Access timeline tools
To enable the Advanced Timeline Tools, click the View menu at the top of the Window, then select Show in timeline > Advanced timeline tools. When the advanced timeline tools option is toggled on, you'll be able to access the timeline tools via their keyboard shortcuts and/or a drop down menu with the Select, Hand, Blande, Range, and Slip tools. Note, some tools are only available with the timeline is Expanded.
