Creating a professional video podcast doesn't require expensive equipment or multiple software applications. Descript offers everything you need to record, edit, and export your video podcast in one place. This guide walks you through the complete workflow of creating a video podcast in Descript.
In this guide, you'll learn how to:
1. Record your episode
Descript gives you flexibility for recording your video podcast:
- Descript Rooms (recommended): Ideal for remote multitrack recording in up to 4K video. Rooms provides a fully integrated recording experience with people who may be a bazillion time zones away.
- Direct Recording in Editor: Perfect for solo work or recording with collaborators in person. Record straight into your project.
Importing an existing recording
If you already have a recording ready to edit, you can:
- Drag the recordings straight from your computer into your project.
- Effortlessly import Zoom recordings into your project with our integration.
Importing multiple files at once
When uploading multiple separate files, you can combine your files into a sequence—a virtual container that groups related files, allowing you to edit the text as a unified script. This is useful for recordings with multiple speakers or various camera angles. If unchecked, each file will be transcribed and added to the script one after the other. Learn more in our getting started guide on importing and transcribing recordings.
2. Edit your podcast
Once your recording is in Descript, you'll get an automatic transcription, making editing simple and intuitive.
Edit dialogue like a document
Editing in Descript works just like editing a text document:
- Select the text you want to delete.
- Hit the
delete
(macOS) orbackspace
(Windows) key. The text selection will be removed from your script, along with the underlying video or audio.
With just one click, Studio Sound will remove background noise, eliminate room echo, and enhance overall audio quality for your dialogue.
Adding scenes and layouts
You'll use scenes to design and arrange visuals throughout your video:
- Highlight a section where you want to change what's on screen
- Click Add Scene.
- Choose a layout to quickly arrange the visuals in the scene
- Customize the scene until it's just right from the Scene editor.
Save custom layouts on paid plans to reuse across scenes and projects.
Automatic multicam
Even in Descript, editing a multicam podcast manually involves making the same few scenes over and over and can take forever. Enter Underlord, your AI editing assistant. If you recorded in Rooms or imported separate recordings for each participant, Automatic multicam will instantly add all your scenes and layouts across your video.
- Open Underlord and select Automatic multicam
- Choose settings to show only active speakers or include reaction cutaways
- Select a layout pack
- Click Submit and let Underlord get to work
3. Share your podcast
Once your video podcast is ready, it's time to share it with your audience.
You can use Underlord's publishing action Show notes to write show notes and make your social clips. Just open the sidebar, wake up your AI assistant, and put it to work.
You can export your episode in just a few steps:
- Select Export and choose the file type or destination you will be exporting to:
- The export window allows you to export directly to various integrated platforms. You can also export to the cloud, then Download to your computer—it's super-fast. Learn more about exporting options.
- Adjust your export settings.
- Click Export or the download button at the bottom of the export window.
