In rare circumstances, a participant's recording may never finish uploading or be lost. Though we try to avoid these cases at all costs, Descript Rooms has several safety measures in place to help you recover and preserve your recordings. This page will discuss the following measures to recover your primary recordings:
- Visiting the recovery page to resume uploading.
- Using recovered and Backup files when needed.
File recovery in Rooms
If a recording stops uploading altogether, we call this a stalled or partial file. If one of the guests has a stalled file, the host will be shown an alert guiding them to send the guest a recovery link. Once the guest clicks the recovery link, the file upload will resume. Guests have up to seven days to click the recovery link and resume their primary recording uploads. Note: guests must use the same machine and browser they recorded with to recover a stalled file.
You’ll also receive an email notification when the full-quality file is available.
Accessing your recovered file
Recovered files are placed in the Recordings > Room - (date and time) folder. You can check if a recording is a partial recording as it will have (partial) in the file's name and be shorter than the other recordings.
Replacing a partial recording with the recovered file
Once the file has been recovered, you will see a second file in your Project panel. This file will be the full length of your recording. Although a recovered file was added to your project, you will need to manually replace the partial recording that was added to your sequence. Follow these steps to swap the partial file with the fully recovered version:
- Open the sequence that contains the partial file.
- Remove the track with the partial file. It will be shorter than all other tracks and files in the sequence.
- Select "Add Media", and then choose the recovered file from the Recordings folder.
- Close the sequence editor by selecting “Done.”
What if I can't recover the primary recordings?
Backup recordings in Rooms are captured for each participant in the session. These backups are similar to Zoom-quality recordings and act as a failsafe in case the primary recordings encounter issues. You can find these files by navigating to the Recordings > Room - (date and time) > Backups folder in your project files. You can follow the same steps above to add them to your sequence, but also be sure to add both the video and audio files as tracks.
