Setting the Local Storage Location of Files (Older Versions)

A new version of Descript is rolling out. This update introduces faster editing, transcription, importing, and exporting, instant AI effects like Eye Contact, Studio Sound, and green screen, instant project loading with 4K streaming, and cloud-based processing and storage that frees up your local drive. Some workflows may differ from previous versions as we continue to refine the experience.

In older versions of Descript, you had the option to set a specific storage location for your project files. This was useful if you were running low on hard drive space or wanted to keep your files organized in a particular directory.

How File Storage Worked in Older Versions

Unlike the latest cloud-based version of Descript, older versions stored project files locally on your hard drive. Changing the location of local files did not move them directly—files were removed from their current location and re-synced from the cloud when you reopened a project.

Avoid Data Corruption

To prevent data corruption, it was important to follow the correct steps when changing the storage location. Manually altering folder contents could lead to file issues.

How to Change the Storage Location

  1. From the top right corner of the Drive view, click your profile picture.

  2. Click Settings to open the App settings.

  3. Select Change to the right of Offline storage location.

  4. A dialog panel would appear; click Select location at the bottom of the panel.

  5. Choose the new location for your Descript folder.

  6. Select Confirm and relaunch.

  7. You would be logged out of Descript automatically. Click Sign in to Descript to re-authenticate, and your files would be relocated when you reopened your projects.

What Happens if My Storage Location Is Offline or Missing?

If the selected storage location was offline or inaccessible, Descript would display a notification. You had two options:

  • Retry - Attempt to reconnect to the specified location.

  • Reset location to default - Restore offline files to the system’s default storage. You would be logged out and required to Sign in to Descript again.

Resetting the Default Storage Location

If you later needed to reset your media storage location to the default, you could:

  1. Manually delete the folder previously set as the storage location.

  2. Fully quit and reload Descript.

  3. When prompted that the storage location could no longer be found, select Reset location to default, and Descript would automatically reconfigure the storage path.

With the latest version of Descript, manual storage location management is no longer necessary. Cloud-based processing ensures minimal impact on local storage, eliminating the need for manual file management.
