A transition controls how one scene or clip visually moves into the next — like a crossfade, slide, or blur. Each scene boundary supports only one transition, and it will affect all visuals in the scene.
By default, Descript will automatically apply Smart Transitions to scenes for a smooth visual flow. This guide, however, is about manually editing transitions when you want more control over how scenes flow.
Scenes are the building blocks of your video. If you're not familiar with how scenes work in Descript, check out the Scenes overview guide first.
This article covers
Where scene transitions appear
Transitions appear between two scenes in your project. You’ll see a transition icon between scene blocks in the timeline. You can customize or remove these transitions at any time.
How to change a scene transition
Click the scene thumbnail in the script, then select the hourglass icon to edit the transition.
Or, expand the timeline, then click the black handle between two scenes in the scene thumbnail at the top of the timeline. Then select Edit transition, and choose a new transition from the dropdown list (e.g., Crossfade, Slide, Cut).
Remove a transition
To remove a transition between two scenes, click the transition icon and choose Remove from the transition menu. This disables the visual effect between those scenes — playback will jump directly from one to the next.
You may need to unfocus the current scene. Clicking into the white space around the scene editor can unfocus the scene in the timeline and display the transition handles.
