Creating a custom template

In this guide, we’ll walk you through the steps for creating a custom template in Descript.

Custom templates are a premium feature

If you are on a drive with a Free plan, unlock the power of custom templates by upgrading your subscription.

1. Make a new template project

  1. From the Drive view, open the Template Logo.png Templates tab and select + New template in the top right corner.
  2. Name your template in the app bar at the top of the editor screen. This will help when you need to find and use the template later on.

2. Create your scenes

Making a template works just like working on a project in Descript. What you add to the individual template scenes depends on how you want to leverage templates throughout projects. Here are a few common use cases where templates can help speed up your workflow:

  • Designing customized audiograms or social media clips.
  • Setting up video layouts for interviews with multiple speakers or related recordings.
  • Crafting a unique style for captions.
  • Arranging presentation layouts.
  • Making a complete series of scenes for a particular project or production.

3. Publish your template

Once you're done creating your template, you'll need to publish it in order to use your template scenes in projects and/or share with others. You can always come back and edit the template project if you need to make updates to it.

  1. Select Publish Template in the top right corner.
  2. Name each scene in your template.
  3. Set your template scenes’ thumbnails.
  4. Select Publish Template in the bottom right corner of the publish template window

Bonus: saving a project scene to a template

If you're working on a project and decide you want to use a scene you created in future content, you can save the scene to a template. This can be especially useful if you are working with a multitrack sequence and have created a specific layout for each video track in the sequence (e.g. laying out multiple speakers or arranging videos for a picture-in-picture video).

To save a scene to a template:

  1. Right-click on the scene in your scene rail  and select Save to template; or, select ... at the top of your scene properties and select Save to template.
  2. Choose Create new template; or, select an existing template from the list and select Add to template
  3. A banner will appear in the bottom right corner of the app. Once the scene has been added to a template, the template project will open.
  4. Name or rename your template.
  5. Select Publish template (for new templates) or Publish changes (for existing templates).
  6. Name your new scene and select Publish template or Publish changes.

The scene will now be available for use in any of your projects. You can access it from the top of the app by clicking Template_Logo.png, or by selecting Choose template at the top of the sidebar when viewing scene properties.
