Descript's Integration on Zapier

Zapier is a free tool that automates workflows between Descript and various popular web applications. If you frequently transcribe audio, Zapier will help increase efficiency and reduce the time spent on repetitive tasks.

With Zapier, you can streamline tasks such as:

  • Automatically transcribing files when they are added to a Dropbox or Google Drive folder
  • Automatically exporting transcriptions to Dropbox or Google Drive
  • Saving an iPhone voice memo to Dropbox and automatically transcribing it
  • Sending email or text notifications when new transcriptions are ready

Before using this integration in Descript, you must create a free Zapier account.

Zapier Lingo

If you're new to Zapier, here's some terminology to help you understand how this integration works.

Term Definition
Zap An automated workflow that connects your apps and services together.
Trigger The event that starts a Zap.
Action The task your Zap carries out when the trigger event happens.

Automated Descript workflow using Zapier Lingo.

You can create a Zap for when an audio file is added to a Dropbox folder named "transcribe." Adding the file triggers the action of transcribing the file. Additionally, you can make a Zap triggered when a Descript transcription is completed, with the action of emailing you the transcript. This automates your transcription workflow.

Supported websites for Zapier Integration

The Zapier integration currently supports file URLs from the following domains:

  • airtable.com
  • discordapp.com
  • dropboxapi.com
  • dropboxusercontent.com
  • google.com
  • googleapis.com
  • twilio.com
  • zapier.com

Only audio files are supported

Please note that the Zapier integration currently supports only audio files and does not include support for video files.

Using Descript's Zapier Integration

  1. Create a free Zapier account.
  2. Follow the steps in one of our pre-built Zap flows below.

Transcribing Files by Uploading to Google Drive

Trigger Setup

  1. Log into Zapier, then click the Make a Zap button in the left-hand sidebar.
  2. Search for and select Google Drive from the list of apps in the Trigger section.
  3. Select the desired Trigger Event from the list, then click Continue. For this guide, we'll use New File in Folder to ensure that only files added to a specific folder will trigger the integration.

Create Source Folder

If you haven't already, now would be a good time to create a folder on Google Drive where you can drop your audio files.
  1. Click the Sign in to Google Drive button in the Choose Account section. A pop-up window will then ask you to authenticate with Google.
  2. Enter your username and password (or select an account that is already signed in), then click the Allow button to authorize Zapier for use with your Google Account.
  3. Once you're done, you can select the authorized Google account from the list of options and then click Continue.
  4. Next, you can choose which Drive and Folder on your Google account should be checked for new files. When ready, you may click Continue.
  5. Zapier will now prompt you to test the Google Drive portion of the trigger. Before you do it, make sure that an audio file has recently been added to your Google Drive folder. Once you're ready to go ahead, you can click Test trigger.

Action Setup

Next, you will configure the Action of your Zap.
  1. Search for and select Descript in the list of applications, then click Continue.
  2. In the Action Event pane, select Request Transcription, then click Continue.
  3. If you have not yet created a Descript authorization, click the Sign in to Descript button. A popup window will appear with the Descript authentication page. Enter your credentials, then click the Right Arrow ( > ) to continue. You may then click the Choose an account... dropdown selector to select your Descript authorized account and click Continue.
  4. Click into the File URL field and choose the File: option. In the File Name field, select the Title option.
You may also choose a Descript project and Drive location (if you have more than one Drive) that you would like the resulting transcripts to be stored with the following caveats:
    • If no project is specified, a new project with the same name as the file in your top-level Drive View will be created.
    • You must specify a Drive location if you are a member of more than one Drive on your Descript account.
  5. Click the Test & Review button to review the results. If the test is successful, you may click Turn on Zap.
  6. You may drag a file into your Google Drive folder, and your transcripts will automatically be generated in Descript. It typically takes a few minutes for the files to become available in Descript, and you will see a light grey placeholder when the project and transcription are generated.

Avoid overloading your project

Please note that users who transcribe a significant number of files into the same Descript project may experience degraded project performance over time. To avoid this, we recommend regularly changing the destination project.

Exporting SubRip (.SRT) files to Google Drive
