With the release of Descript Podcast Studio on Wednesday, September 18th, we introduced new pricing plans.

But it’s not what you think! Subscriptions are now about 50% cheaper, and transcription is free — details below.

How is the Free / Basic plan changing?

The Free plan now includes three hours of free transcription, and has audio/video file export.

The three hours act like a trial; when you run through them, you can upgrade to Descript Producer to get free transcription. There’s no more “pay as you go” transcription.

If you had an account prior to September 18th, we added 150 minutes to your account.

How is the Producer subscription price changing?

It’s now $10 per month if you pay annually, or $14 per month if you pay monthly.

The old price was $20 if paid annually, or $24 if paid monthly.

If you’re on one of the old “Standard” plans, that’s also been transitioned over — at the same $10 per month price.

How is the Team plan price changing?

It’s now $15 per month if you pay annually, or $18 per month if you pay monthly.

The old price was $25 if paid annually, or $29 if paid monthly.

Free transcription!?

At Descript, we’ve only reluctantly charged per minute of transcription. We‘ve never liked the idea of charging a per-minute fee for a creative tool. We do it because we are charged by the transcription service providers, and even so, we pass along the cost to you at almost no margin.

Since starting Descript, we’ve expected that AI transcription would rapidly become more accurate, faster, and less expensive — and our costs have come down enough that we’re ready to do what we’ve always wanted: just include it for free in a Descript subscription.

Sounds too good to be true. What’s the catch?

For 99.9% of you, there is no catch.

By default, accounts have a transcription rate limit of 10 hours over a 30 day period (for teams, multiply that by the number of team members).

For the 0.1% of our users who run up against that limit, we make it easy to contact us and request an increase. We won’t charge you if you need a little extra to work through a transcription backlog or something like that. But if you’re looking to regularly transcribe hundreds of hours per month, we might charge a little extra so we don’t end up upside down.

Do I need to do anything to get these new prices?

No. The transcription rate limit changes are immediate, and the new subscription price will be reflected on your next invoice.
