# Glass Blur

> Glass blur adds a translucent, frosted-glass effect to a selected shape or layer.

Use glass blur to blur out something in a video, like a name, a number, or a face, by covering it with a blurred layer. It softens whatever shows through the shape without touching the layer beneath. Unlike the standard [**Blur**](https://help.descript.com/hc/en-us/articles/10327647505549) effect, which blurs its own layer, glass blur is made to sit over a transparent layer and blur what's underneath.

<Warning>
  **Glass blur is not secure redaction**\
  The Glass blur effect is visual only and should not be used to obscure sensitive or private information. If you need to securely hide content, use a solid shape with 100% opacity instead.
</Warning>

## How to add Glass Blur

1. Add a layer from the **Elements** panel in the right sidebar.
2. With the element selected in [the scene editor](/visuals/scene-editor-overview), click **Effects** in the hover toolbar.
3. Choose **Glass blur** from the effect list, then toggle it on. Adjust the **amount** of blur via the slider in the options menu
