# Descript MCP

> Connect Descript to Claude, Claude Code, ChatGPT, Codex, Cursor, Antigravity, Copilot, or VS Code and drive it from a conversation.

The Descript MCP lets an AI assistant drive Descript for you — import media, edit with Underlord,
manage projects, and publish — from a conversation. It authenticates through your Descript login,
so there is no API token to manage.

## Server details

One URL for every account and every client. Your OAuth login is what ties the connection to you and
to the Drive you are signed into in the browser.

### Claude

1. In Claude, open the **Customize** menu from the left pane and select **Connectors**.
2. Search for **Descript** in the connector directory.
3. Click the **+ button** to add it, then click **Connect**.
4. Sign into Descript when prompted, then click **Allow**. The MCP connects to whichever Descript
   Drive you are currently logged into.
5. You are redirected back to Claude, and Descript appears under your connectors.

<Note>
  **Need media generation?** The directory connector does not include generative image or
  video tools. For those, use the custom connector flow below.

### Claude Code

Claude Code takes the server URL directly rather than going through the connector directory:

`-s user` makes Descript available in every project. Drop it to scope the server to the current
project only, or use `-s project` to share it with your team through a checked-in `.mcp.json`.

Then run `/mcp` inside Claude Code and finish signing in through the browser. Descript shows as
**Connected** once you are done.

### ChatGPT

1. Open the Descript listing, or find **Descript** in ChatGPT's app marketplace.
2. Click to **add** the Descript connector.
3. Sign into Descript when prompted, then click **Allow**.
4. You are redirected back to ChatGPT, and Descript appears under your connected apps.

<Note>
  Codex has no marketplace, and the ChatGPT app above does not carry over — Codex is
  configured separately. You only have to do it once, though: the Codex CLI, the ChatGPT
  desktop app, and the IDE extension all read the same `~/.codex/config.toml`.

### Cursor

The marketplace plugin carries more than the raw MCP server: three skills (`create-video`,
`edit-project`, `publish-project`) and a `descript-workflows` rule for working with the tools.

1. Open the plugin page and click **Add to Cursor**, or run `/add-plugin descript` in Cursor.
2. Sign into Descript when prompted, then click **Allow**.

To wire up the server by hand instead, add it to `~/.cursor/mcp.json` for every project, or
`.cursor/mcp.json` for one:

### Antigravity CLI

Antigravity keeps MCP servers in their own file rather than inline in `settings.json` the way the
Gemini CLI did: `~/.gemini/config/mcp_config.json` globally, or `.agents/mcp_config.json` for one
workspace. Remote servers use `serverUrl` — `url` and `httpUrl` are not supported.

Then open Agent Settings with `Cmd+,`, click **Authenticate** next to Descript, and finish signing
in through the browser. Type `/mcp` in the prompt panel to check the connection.

<Note>
  **Coming from the Gemini CLI?** Antigravity offers to convert your existing profiles on
  first launch, but MCP servers move to the new file and field names above.

### VS Code and Copilot

Copilot's MCP servers are configured through VS Code, so both use the same file: `.vscode/mcp.json`
in a workspace, or your user profile via **MCP: Open User Configuration**. VS Code uses `servers`
rather than `mcpServers`, and remote servers need `"type": "http"`.

### Any other MCP client

Point any MCP-capable client at the server URL. The setting usually lives under Settings,
Integrations, Connectors, Apps, or Tools.

1. Find the **custom connector** option — "Add custom connector", "Add MCP server", "Create app",
   or similar.
2. Enter the details:
   * **Name:** Descript
   * **MCP server URL:** `https://api.descript.com/v2/mcp`
   * **Authentication:** OAuth
3. **Save** the connector. Your client may warn about third-party MCP servers; that is standard.
4. **Sign in to Descript** when the browser opens, then click **Allow**.

<Note>
  **No custom connector option?** Your client probably does not support custom MCP servers.
  Check its documentation or ask its support team.

short video about morning coffee."*

  You can also start from Descript: open **Settings → Descript MCP** for connect buttons
  (Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor) and the server URL. See [App
  settings](/account-and-app-settings/app-settings).

## Before you connect

* The MCP uses your Descript login, so no API token is needed. You choose the
  [Drive](/descript-tour/drive-view) your assistant can access when you connect.
* A connection is scoped to a **single Drive**. To switch, log out of Descript on the web, then
  reconnect.
* On a team or enterprise workspace, an admin may need to enable third-party connectors, custom
  connectors, or MCP tools first.
* If your assistant offers multiple modes, use **Chat** mode where available.

## What you can do

Import media, edit with
[Underlord](/getting-started/underlord-beta-your-ai-co-editor-in-descript), find and manage
projects, organize projects into folders, target compositions, publish to a [Descript web
link](/export-and-share/share-page), and track or cancel jobs.

Transcripts export as text, Markdown, HTML, RTF, or SRT — not DOCX.

**Example prompts**

* "Import this video from my desktop into my 'Podcasts' folder and transcribe it"
* "Add Studio Sound and remove filler words from the second composition"
* "Find my 'Q2 Review' project and create a 60-second highlight reel"
* "Write a script about how to make great coffee, turn it into a video, and publish it"

## Known limitations

* **No rendered file download without publishing.** Publish to a Descript web link to get signed
  URLs to the MP4 or audio file. To download without publishing, use the app: [export
  video](/export-and-share/video-gif) or [export audio](/export-and-share/audio).
* **YouTube URLs are not supported as import sources.** Pass a direct file URL, upload the file, or
  use a Google Drive or Dropbox link your assistant can convert.
* **Job history is available for 30 days.**
* **Single-Drive scope.** Editing a project on a different Drive than the one you connected returns
  an error.
* **Claude's directory connector excludes generative image and video tools.** Use the custom
  connector flow if you need them.
